Thornhill Cemetery was opened in August 1952, with the Crematorium opening the following year. This famous Cardiff Cemetery is located in the Thornhill area, and contains two chapels – Wenallt Chapel and Briwnant Chapel. There are a number of different sections for different grave types, including eight Gardens of Remembrance for the scattering of cremated remains.
Thornhill Cemetery was named Cemetery of the Year in both 2019 and 2020 by the Memorial Awareness Board. It is one of the largest cemeteries in Cardiff, currently holding over 3000 cremations and around 700 burials each year. It is due to be extended in 2021 to provide burial space in Cardiff for a further 35-40 years.
